World Hunger Year's Feeding Minds, Fighting Hunger has lesson plans for teaching hunger basics at the primary, intermediate and secondary levels. Available in English, Spanish, French, Chinese, Italian and Arabic. The site now features a Youth Window. This new feature, designed and written for 13-19 year olds, contains information, resources and activities for young people to use on their own. The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has released a video game called Food Force. Available for download for free, the game is compatible with Macs and PCs. The game puts players in charge of a hunger relief effort on the fictional Indian Ocean island of Sheylan, ravaged by a civil war, flooding and drought. You lead a crack multinational team of WFP professionals including a logistics officer, nutritionist and air drop specialist, and you must lead the team through six missions to bring food and supplies to the desperate natives of Sheylan -- everything from air surveillance to figuring out a good balanced diet, airdropping supplies, and helping natives get the most out of their natural resources by planning future farming efforts. Christian Aid's Global Gang is a site just for kids. It is packed with high-tech games, stories and news that addresses children rights concerns. Such games as Sneaky Snakes, Carpet Kids and the Landmine Challenge raise kid's awareness of injustice. Also, is a great resource for teachers and youth leaders.
Maryknoll's Educator's Corner has coloring books for children (K-12,) a slide show on Namibia with in-class and take-home assignments and other activities that discuss the link between life style choices and social justice. Church World Service's Hungry Decisions is a simulation exercise suitable for older students, youth and adults. kNOw HUNGER is a 6-unit social studies curriculum geared toward high school youth. The curriculum gives students a way to understand and address hunger in their communities, their state and the nation. It facilitates knowledge about the extent and causes of hunger in the United States, its link to poverty and income disparities, and enables students to act on what they learn. Nickelodeon has teamed up with the Millennium Campaign to launch the Nick 2015 Initiative, a multi-platform campaign aimed at raising awareness to end poverty and get kids involved in the realization of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). UNICEF's Voices of Youth provides activities, puzzles and quizzes that address the problem of birth registration, child labor concerns, polio, landmines and other children's rights issues. The new interactive website Build a Village complements the curriculum with games, puzzles, fact sheets, and alternative giving opportunities. The United Methodist Church's "Building a New Community: God's Children Overcoming Racism" has 72 pages of stories, activities, and songs and is available by calling 800.251.8591. The University of St. Thomas' Catholic Social Teaching and Catholic Education offers teachers an array of resources on Catholic social teaching, as well as, resources for elementary, high school and college age students. The Presbyterian Hunger Program's Children's Hunger Educational Kit is has six great resources for teaching children about hunger - Biblical grounds, hunger information and action steps. Catholic Relief Services engaging CRS Kids website has puzzles, interactive activities, word games, fascinating facts, activities and a section for teachers. The ELCA's Division for Global Missions has games and crafts in Africa Country Packets. Feeding Minds, Fighting Hunger The lessons in this resource have been developed as a starting point for teachers to introduce the topic of hunger in the world to their students. Given the wide variety of problems, cultures and environments around the world, the lessons have been prepared as a framework for teachers. Three lessons are provided for each of three broad school levels: primary, intermediate and secondary. The Canadian Foodgrains Bank Food for All: A Buffet of Ideas About Hunger has lesson plans on world hunger for families and fun activities that a child can access and play. Come back for seconds. Heifer International's Read to Feed program includes educational games and activities for youth and information for parents, leaders and teachers. It motivates children to read books so they can help impoverished people around the world. The Stand With Africa campaign of Lutheran World Relief, the ELCA World Hunger Program and LCMS World Relief supports African churches and communities as they withstand HIV/AIDS, banish hunger and build peace. One World's Tiki the Penguin explains genetic engineering and the role of transnational corporations but doesn't like what it sees. The site also provides links to articles about success and failures from a environmental perspective. Their goal is to go beyond the personal stories that dominate family coverage in most news outlets by bringing together meaningful information, success stories and ideas for action. ConAgra Foods’ Feeding Children Better program (in conjunction with America's Second Harvest) sponsors a number of initiatives to feed hungry children, and includes a national multi-media public awareness campaign to raise awareness about the problem of child hunger in our country. The International Alliance Against Hunger brings together local, national, and international organizations to share best practices, progress, or questions and raise international visibility of on-going efforts to eradicate hunger around the world. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development's Poverty USA has developed a fabulous interactive website on poverty in the United States for grades K-12 and adults.
